“This play uses fighting as a love language,” the actor James Yaegashi says of Sumo. Written by Lisa Sanaye Dring, the new play follows six sumo wrestlers at an elite training facility in Tokyo, where their lives are bound together by sport. When the 18-year-old Akio arrives, brash and hungry for recognition, he disrupts the equilibrium of the group. Facing grueling physical demands, and with sponsorship money on the line, the wrestlers struggle to become the men they aspire to be. Fight scenes reveal their fears and ambitions, turning each battle into a window on their inner lives. Ralph B. Peña directs. —Jeanne Malle
